Targeted Behavior Targeting McCann Family Julia Wandelt, aged 24, is accused of a campaign of harassment against the relatives of Madeleine, who disappeared from a Portuguese resort in Portugal in 2007 at the age of three. The woman from Poland bombarded Kate and Gerry McCann and their older offspring, Sean and Amelie, with hundreds of calls, messages, voicemails and letters between 2022 and earlier this year, and turned up at their home demanding a DNA test, the court was earlier informed. Investigation Details Providing testimony on Tuesday, the chief investigator on the missing personâs case, explained he had gone against procedure to test Wandelt âintending she may stop her conduct towards the McCann familyâ. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cramwell said over a dozen persons had previously claimed to be the missing girl but that: âWe would not take DNA only if convinced that person was Madeleine because I did not want setting a precedent. âIf it was revealed in the media I had taken DNA off an individual probably not to be Madeleine, I was concerned I would have had many persons coming forward saying âIâm Madeleineâ. âI sincerely hold major concerns about reaching out to the family to say I intend to take DNA from an individual â that could have raised their hopes. It could have been quite emotionally damaging and hard for the family.â DNA Comparison He said the police had already judged Wandelt not to be Madeleine because of a lack of resemblance and that she was not the same age than the missing girl. But, he said, after learning Leicester police intended to detain Wandelt on criminal accusations, he âdecided that the DNA would be taken during detentionâ. He declared: âA comparison took place. It conclusively proved that Julia Wandelt cannot be Madeleine McCann.â Jury Hearings Jurors learned that in April this year, the detective saw Wandelt under arrest and stated to her that her DNA had been tested alongside Madeleineâs and that the samples did not match. Jurors were told he told Wandelt while speaking with her: âYou are not Madeleine McCann.â The court heard that during their conversation, Wandelt inquired: âDo you really want to find Madeleine?â, and Cranwell told the jury he answered: âYes.â He said notwithstanding the evidence, he believed Wandelt âcould allege we have manipulated the sampleâ, remarking: âIt was possible she would not believe she isn't Madeleine notwithstanding scientific proof.â Psychological Toll In prior court sessions, testimony revealed how the relatives were left scared and distressed by their âcreepyâ and âextremely troublingâ interactions with Wandelt and the other accused Karen Spragg, 61, from Cardiff, as the pair attempted to push for a DNA test. Jurors heard how the defendants made âincreasingly bizarre plansâ to obtain Kate McCannâs DNA, which included rummaging in the McCannsâ bins and stealing utensils from restaurants that they had eaten in. Both defendants both deny one count of stalking. Proceedings are ongoing.
