An extensive extended journey around the Australian Coast is being halted in the wake of the death of an older woman who was left behind by the vessel on a isolated coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on the tropical location with shipmates from the vessel, but separated from the party for a break. The liner sailed away leaving her and came back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the woman was not present.

An extensive rescue mission located her body the following day.

Authorities are examining the incident, alongside police and the medical examiner.

The CEO of the cruise operator announced that guests and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were told that the rest of the cruise had been terminated due to the "sad loss and prior engine troubles".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that passengers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to organize the travel back of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also released an revised announcement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Commander" preventing any further travelers from entering the vessel.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its arrival.

Sequence of Incidents

The liner originally sailed from the coastal city on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the moment of the senior passenger's passing. Lizard Island was the first stop on the itinerary.

The ship accommodates up to 120 passengers with 46 staff, according to corporate details. It was purpose-built to reach isolated locations of the Australian coast and is equipped with "small boats" - small boats used to ferry individuals on shore trips.

Incidents such as this are infrequent, and cruise ships have systems to document which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] on the ship really isn't an option," one expert remarked.
