Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
