🔗 Share this article Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites. When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal playmaker. His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara. Overcoming Initial Obstacles Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract. Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled. An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and being named best player. Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration. Inspiration and Playing Style Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye. His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips. Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted. Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham. On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future. “The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.” Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
