Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus. Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception It would be easy to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise. “The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.” Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show. “We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.” “We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes. The Big Question: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus? Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of. “We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.” On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort. “My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.” Of course, one could always use the classics? “I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes. Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
