A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In the final days of December, Williams married Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
