The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
