It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office. “Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.” The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House. The animal, donated by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection. A Future Secured Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release. “The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message. “It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.” Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
