UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
