Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
